How to Market Your Product to a Foreign Country

Going global doesn't necessarily mean rethinking your entire strategy

By Daniel Kidd

In order to market to your foreign audience as effectively as possible, you must first define your audience. Knowing exactly who you’re trying to market to will help with knowing what methods to use. Try creating a profile of your typical customer. What are they interested in? What are they talking about? How can you relate your own product to this so that it’s seen as interesting and relevant?

Get to know your audience and get involved – it’s always a good idea to keep abreast of trends in your industry, but it’s especially important if those trends are a hot topic of conversation for your potential customers!

Secondly, when you’ve defined your target audience, consider where you’re going to market to them. For example, it’s not a good idea to use the same updates on Facebook as you do on Twitter. Twitter requires you to be concise to fit within the 140 character limit – you should be aiming for brevity and including keyword rich hashtags. Facebook, on the other hand, lets you get a little more involved, and include images and so on. Make sure you’re targeting your marketing efforts not only to your audience, but to the platform you’re using too.

Lastly, offer your audience valuable and shareable content. The best marketing is the sort that spreads. Create infographics that your audience will want to share to their own networks, ask open ended questions to get conversations flowing and people talking about your brand, and look out for potential customers asking questions where you can offer insightful advice. Position yourself as an industry expert and watch your audience grow.

To market to your audience effectively, you need to engage with them – so get involved and reap the rewards.

Next you must answer an important question: which marketing channel will be the best for your business in each country? Find out which channels resonate best in the country you’re targeting by doing extensive research. For example, in the UK, the two most popular social networks are Twitter and Facebook, Whereas in India the two most popular are Instagram and Vine. You should also determine your target audience (this can vary in each country) and then use this information to find out which channels your audience frequents. With this information, you can promote your product or service via the most appropriate channel in the most suitable way for that target market.

Before starting any marketing campaign though, remember to research any cultural or language differences that may exist and change your campaign accordingly.
